Analysis, interpretation, development of core strength in grammar
With an emphasis on strong writing, reading, and grammatical skills, Middle School English classes are designed to prepare students for the challenges of the Upper School.
Each student is required to produce one piece of interpretive, creative, or analytical writing weekly. Boys are encouraged to revise and edit their work as they strive for logical, fluent, and focused insights.
In addition, students examine human values through study of literary classics. Boys are taught to appreciate not only a story’s plot, but also the language and style the author chose for his or her medium. This approach allows students to formulate interpretive and critical responses to their reading.
Grammar is taught as a four-year sequential course. Students aim to develop a keen understanding of the fundamental aspects of the English language, which further enables them to produce clear and original writing.
