Modern Language

A Foundation for Scholarly Achievement

Middle School modern language classes aim to build confidence in communication, a strong framework in vocabulary and grammar, and an appreciation for other cultures. Boys study French, Spanish, or Chinese, with the goal of functioning in a country where the language is spoken. Technology enhances instruction — students leverage audiovisual materials, create newscasts, and engage with primary sources.

All fifth graders begin with Latin twice weekly, building a foundation for continued Latin study or a transition to a modern language. In grades six through eight, Latin deepens students’ understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and translation, preparing them for advanced Upper School work while fostering appreciation for classical language.
