A Reason, Not a Rule

The Upper School math department offers a comprehensive sequence including Geometry, Algebra II, Precalculus, and Calculus, alongside foundational courses for students who need them and advanced options such as Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra for those excelling in the subject. Courses in statistics are also available for those interested.

Each standard course is offered at three or more levels, ensuring students learn at an appropriate pace and challenge. All tracks emphasize high attainment, combining carefully chosen problem sets for essential practice and opportunities to develop independent mathematical thinking.

Technology is used to perform calculations impractical by hand, while students’ numerical skills are continually developed through regular mental arithmetic quizzes and calculator-free tests. Most importantly, students learn that there’s a reason behind every mathematical fact; understanding these reasons reveals the subject’s logical clarity and builds a lasting foundation.

Brunswick participates annually in the AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME competitions, at which some students achieve notable results on these demanding national exams.
